Samsung Announces Exynos i S111, a New Narrowband IoT Solution

Expanding its ‘Exynos i’ series, Samsung has announced the Exynos iS111, a new NB-IoT (narrowband Internet of Things) which consists of modem, processor, memory and GNSS functions in one chip .

The Exynos iS111 is capable of offering accurate location feedback, strong security, wide coverage and low-power operation. Additionally, the new chip also supports real-time tracking applications such as safety wearables or smart meters.

“IoT will be able to evolve to offer new features beyond the conventional household space with IoT-dedicated solutions that present a broad range of opportunities,” said Ben Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “Exynos i S111’s highly secure and efficient communication capabilities will bring more exciting NB-IoT applications to life.”

Some applications which require low-power communication and wide-range coverage to transmit small-sized data are best suited for this chip unlike other radio connectivity solutions like Bluetooth and ZigBee which are suitable for short-range scenarios within a confined area.

As mentioned earlier, the Exynos iS111 is equipped with a modem which is capable to operate in standalone and comes with LTE Rel. 14 support that can transmit data at 127-kilobits-per-second (kbps) for downlink and 158kbps uplink.

For security, the S111 in the chip uses a hardware block called Security Sub-System (SSS) which keeps the transmitted data secure and private.
