Samsung is one of the smartphone manufacturers actively investing to develop 5G network technology. Now Samsung has officially launched the Exynos Modem 5100. This is the world’s first 5G-NR modem, according to the 5G-NR standard, which the 3GPP organization recently launched for the independent 5G network.

Exynos Modem 5100 to accelerate 5G commercialization with the successful over-the-air 5G-NR data call

According to the press release, Samsung has successfully implemented an application call through the 5G-NR mobile network, with a 5G base station and an Exynos Modem 5100-based terminal.

“Samsung’s leadership in communication technologies and market-proven knowledge allowed us to develop the industry’s first 5G modem, the Exynos Modem 5100, which fully complies with the latest 3GPP standards,” said Dr. Inyup Kang, president and head of System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. “As the industry prepares the shift toward 5G, Samsung will continue to drive the growth of innovative ideas and new services in mobile applications and other emerging industries.”

Exynos Modem 5100 is manufactured on a 10nm process, besides the 5G standards, it is also compatible with 2G GSM / CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, and 4G LTE technologies. This 5G modem chip can operate on sub-6GHz and mmWave bands, which are standard throughout the world.

Therefore, Samsung hopes Exynos Modem 5100 will soon be applied in practice, even if the 5G technology is not really popular.

Samsung said it would be ready to make the Exynos Modem 5100 and be available to OEMs by the end of 2018. However, the Galaxy S10 coming out early next year may not be equipped with this 5G modem chip, according to a recent statement. of Samsung.
