Qualcomm Flight RB5 5G is the World’s First 5G Drone Platform

Qualcomm has announced a new drone platform enabled with 5G connectivity and Artificial Intelligence, Qualcomm Flight RB5 5G. It focuses on investing in solutions to encourage the advancement of commercial and business drones, which are models that have features and functions that can be exploited by the most varied sectors, such as the film industry, for example.

According to Qualcomm, the new platform will feature devices equipped with the SoC Qualcomm QRB5165, which has the main technologies related to the Internet of Things (IoT), bringing these devices to network compatibility 5G high performance and low power consumption.

The AI used by the processor allows the drone to remotely identify various objects or situations, in addition to allowing the user to configure a schedule according to their needs or use of the drone, with a camera that allows filming with a maximum resolution of up to 8K at 30 FPS or 4K at 60 FPS.

“We have continued to engage many leading drone companies, enabling 200+ global robotics and drone ecosystem members in addition to consistently driving and promoting worldwide drone standardization and transformative 5G capabilities in organizations such as 3GPP, GSMA, the Global UTM Alliance, the Aerial Connectivity Joint Initiative (ACJA) and ASTM,” said Dev Singh, senior director, business development and general manager of autonomous robotics, drones and intelligent machines, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We are proud to continue our momentum of enabling the digital transformation of global industries by unveiling the Qualcomm Flight RB5 5G Platform, a solution that is purpose-built for drone development with enhanced autonomy and intelligence features, bringing premium connected flight capabilities to industrial, enterprise and commercial segments.”

The expectation is that other manufacturers will also advance and announce models with support for 5G, allowing to control the flight through the Internet instead of radio waves, removing the distance barrier, as long as the device has an Internet connection and battery.

“Many of the expected benefits of drones will be further accelerated and strengthened with 5G, including delivery, inspections, and search and rescue, which will require a highly secure and reliable connection. We are excited to see Qualcomm Technologies continue to innovate with its latest announcement on a 5G drone platform” –

Kevin Hetrick, vice-president of AT&T construction and access engineering.
