Last year, Google discontinued the Nexus series, in other words, it replaced the Nexus with a new Pixel series. Pixel is Google’s new smartphone brand and in 2016 it came with the first set of smartphones in the series, called the Pixel and Pixel XL.
Both handsets were quite decent in terms of specs, and no doubt kept the best ever camera in a smartphone. Other specs were somewhat better compared to other flagships smartphones, but backward in some aspects.
Now Google has come up with the successors of these smartphones, called the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The new devices are similar in a lot of ways but come with a bunch of new features and upgraded hardware specifications. So there are some key differences between the original Pixel and Pixel 2 which can be considered in case of upgrading.
The Original Pixel vs Pixel 2
Firstly talk about the similarities between the Original Pixel and Pixel 2
Camera: The camera on both, the first-gen and the second-gen Pixels are almost similar, on paper at least. There is a 12MP primary camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. It is equipped with phase-detection technology and the laser autofocus sensor.
Both new and old models are capable of shooting 4K videos at 30 frames per second, or up to 1080p at 120 fps.
Display: The 5-inch 1080p (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) P-OLED display is also same, though the successor slightly edges out the original Pixel in color reproduction.
Other Specs: Other similar specs include 4GB of RAM, no option for expandable storage, fingerprint sensors, no wireless charging and USB Type-C.
Differences between the Pixel 1 and Pixel 2
Processor: The successor has a slight leg up because of its power-efficient Snapdragon 835 processor as compared to the Snapdragon 821 in original Pixel.
Storage and Battery: The base storage has been bumped up from 32GB to 64GB which is a big difference for users who want more storage because there’s no SD card slot. However, 128 GB variants are also available in both models The Pixel 2 might disappoint in terms of battery power because it has been lowered from 2770 mAh (in Pixel 1) to 2700 mAh.
Other Specs: The Pixel 2 is water resistant and it takes more than a few design cues from the original Pixel. The new Pixel features two stereo configured front-facing speakers on the top and bottom bezels. Google has used Corning Gorilla Glass 5 in the Pixel 2, which is “highly (80 percent) likely to survive drops up to 5.2 feet, while Gorilla Glass 4 peaks at 3.2 feet,” claims Corning.
Is it worth the upgrade?
Now we’ve seen that there are some similarities as well as differences in both Pixel smartphones. So, the decision whether to upgrade from Pixel 1 to Pixel 2 can be taken based on these specs and what a user wants. For some users, these are big differences, but others won’t care as much.
